MAIN / IPL / Highest Strike Rate in IPL: 5 Fastest Scorers in the IPL

Cricket isn’t all about making runs quickly, but in an increasingly fast-paced game – especially in a tournament like the IPL, it is of utmost importance. When you only have 20 overs of the world’s best bowlers coming at you in a high-stakes cash-rich league, you have to be really good to keep the run rate high or the required rate satisfied.

It’s hard enough to score runs at a strike rate of over 140 across several matches, yet some people do so over the course of long careers. A smaller handful manages to score in an even more prolific manner, and those that do have gone down in the annals of IPL – if not cricket – history. Let’s take a look at 5 players with the best strike rate in the Indian Premier League who have played at least 30 matches. Please note that the statistics are accurate as of before this year’s tournament began.

Strike Rate

Andre Russell

Sunil Narine

Virender Sehwag

Chris Morris

Nicholas Pooran

Batting strike rate is the average number of runs scored every 100 balls faced. The higher strike rate a batter maintains over the course of their innings, the more aggressive and dangerous they appear to opposing bowlers.

1. Highest Strike Rate in IPL History – Andre Russell

  • Country: Jamaica
  • Role: All-Rounder
  • Batting: Right-Handed
  • Bowling: Right-Arm Fast

Starting off our list is one of the main men of Kolkata Knight Riders, Andre Russell. The ballistic Jamaican has often gone off the rails to pull off some of the biggest heists the IPL has seen with his incredible chasing abilities. There’s almost no bowler in the IPL that Dre Russ hasn’t sent out of the park, and he’s also excellent with the ball on occasion. He is also arguably the best finisher in IPL, with only a few peers.

After a stellar 2019, he averaged a monstrous 56.66 at a strike rate of 204.81 – the highest strike rate in IPL all season; Russell had a weak outing in 2020. However, he was decent in 2021 and has gone off to a flying start this season. Over the course of 70 innings, Russell has scored 1,700 runs at an average of 29.31, with that all-important strike rate standing at a mind-boggling 178.57.

2. Relentless Aggressor – Sunil Narine

  • Country: Trinidad and Tobago
  • Role: All-Rounder
  • Batting: Left-Handed
  • Bowling: Right-Arm Off-Spin

If someone had asked you before 2017 if Sunil Narine was someone who has the highest strike rate in IPL, you would surely have laughed at them. You can still laugh at them because Andre Russell is a cut above the rest, but Narine has been absolutely brutal over the last few seasons, climbing up from being a tailender to opening as a pinch hitter for the KKR. He’s not the most consistent, but you can rest assured that he’ll be aggressive. On top of that, he’s a bowling all-rounder, so when he doesn’t perform with the bat, he usually performs with the ball.

Unfortunately, after a glorious 3 seasons of decent batting, Narine’s batting has been gradually deteriorating, with his average dropping to under 10 over the last year. Nevertheless, he has made 954 runs over 76 innings at an average of 15.63 and a robust strike rate of 161.69.

How to calculate the strike rate in cricket? Simply divide the number of balls they have bowled by the number of wickets they have taken. So, you have a better idea of the possible match result 👌🤩

3. Highest Strike Rate in the Early Days of the IPL – Virender Sehwag

  • Country: India
  • Role: Batter
  • Batting: Right-Handed
  • Bowling: Right Arm Off-Break

The most experienced player on this list, Sehwag was one of the few players in the 2000s Indian squad who were built for T20s before the format even existed. A brilliant right-hander with terrific stroke play, Sehwag was excellent for the Delhi Daredevils between 2008 and 2013 and continued to show his brilliance after moving to Punjab Kings. He might not be the best batsman in IPL history, but the former Indian opener ended his career with not just the top-most strike rate in IPL at the time.

Following a relatively short final season in 2015, Sehwag hung up his gloves and called it quits. Although he never lifted an IPL trophy, he is still remembered as one of the greatest players of the modern game. Sehwag played 104 innings to score 2,728 runs at 27.55 and had a strike rate of 155.44.

4. Most Expensive Player in IPL History – Chris Morris

  • Country: South Africa
  • Role: All-Rounder
  • Batting: Right-Handed
  • Bowling: Right-Arm Fast-Medium

Long before he was stupefyingly purchased for the highest price for any player in the history of the IPL, Chris Morris was fantastic with the bat. Between 2015 and 2018, he was in superb form despite playing relatively few matches. However, since 2019 he seems to have lost his touch with the bat, and although he continues to be decent with the ball, he’s just not as prolific as his peers. During his time in the IPL, Morris has played for the Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rajasthan Royals.

Although he retired earlier this year, he was known more for being the most expensive failure in the IPL rather than the solid record he had built up in the tournament before his last few campaigns. Across 51 innings in the IPL, Morris scored 618 runs at 22.07 with a formidable 155.27 strike rate.

5. IPL Highest Strike Rate Wicket-Keeper – Nicholas Pooran

  • Country: Trinidad and Tobago
  • Role: Wicket-Keeper Batter
  • Batting: Left-Handed
  • Bowling: Right-Arm Off-Break

The only wicket-keeper to feature on this list, Pooran is also the one with the shortest career. If Morris had a poor year in 2021, it was nothing close to how far Pooran fell during the same period of time. After being purchased for an exorbitant price, Pooran ended up averaging a cancerous 7.72 over 12 matches at a pathetic strike rate of 111.84. Nevertheless, he remains a highly potent cricketer who can really cut loose and change the tide of the match – something stereotypical of most West Indian batters.

The Trinidadian had a couple of great seasons and has bounced back from his failures last year to be well on his way to what seems to be a mature and successful season. Pooran has played 31 matches in the IPL, and during this time, he has made 606 runs at 22.44, boasting one of the best batting strike rates with his 154.98.
